PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The purpose of the project is to provide hydrologic analysis, alternatives assessment, updated hydraulics, conceptual design, and an updated flood hazard area delineation (FHAD). The project goals include:
  • Update hydrology in the basin
  • Identify existing flooding and drainage issues within the study area
  • Obtain input from the public, stakeholders, and the project sponsors to develop feasible solutions
  • Recommend conceptual stormwater conveyance and detention improvement measures
  • Prepare a FHAD for the West Fork Tributary
  • Prepare floodplain analysis on the remaining Tributaries

PROJECT AREA The Second Creek Tributaries watersheds are scattered in various locations in Denver, Commerce City, and the Denver International Airport (DEN). Below are the fifteen tributaries analyzed in this study:
  • Alfalfa Draw
  • Barberry Run
  • Buckthorn Draw
  • Cocklebur Run
  • Dandelion Draw
  • Dragway Draw
  • Gramma Gulch
  • Hawthorn Gulch
  • Peachleaf Run
  • Pinon Draw
  • Quick Draw
  • Runaway Run
  • Short Run
  • Tower Run
  • West Fork
Each tributary connects to Second Creek at various location along the river, except for Short Run and Tower Run which confluences with West Fork.  The reaches crosses through several jurisdictions including:  Unincorporated Adams County, the City of Commerce City, the City of Denver, and the Denver International Airport (DEN).  The upper half of the watershed is in a current state of rapid development due to its vicinity to DEN and the “Aerotropolis” area.  The lower portion Second Creek Tributaries crosses through more developing areas in Commerce City.
